A court building sequence in the back yard of Steve Mielke, Green Bay.
Picure #1: Jim Clink and Tim Clank, (names changed to protect the innocent)
Jim, left, has 25 years experience in the concrete construction industry. Tim, who is about to bean the boss with shovel from the other the other walkway, is checking the level of the grade job underlayment of six inches of sand. It’s probably not as necessary as these guys may believe, but they want to do a permanent job with no frost movement. Straight 2x4's are used as form-boards, leveled and staked every four feet. The unseen pit area is formed similarly.
Apparently, Steve's garage does not connect with the alley in the background. Neither do the neighbors’ except for one. Why the alley? They do like fences though. The alley provided runway access for the mixer truck to spout ready-mix directly into the form.

Picture #2: Completed court occupied by two young ballplayers, Matt, 9, and Greg, 13.
The first baseman Greg is pouting because Dad stole the spot for home plate, or was it right field? Steve must have visited Louie Gibson for clay and he has set the stake. Note the relatively small pit area, always a sign of a pro horseshoe pitcher. Let’s hope he left the 2x4's that formed the pit in place to protect the concrete pit surround. Steve has a crazy shoe that spins the wrong way, but who's to say? Alan Francis seems to like it that way. Normal pitchers turn the shoe toward the North PoIe. Steve's shoe turns toward Antarctica, I think. The guys are still pouting. Hope they got over it! That picture was taken in 1997, 12 years ago!
Picture #3: Finished job, one year later.
Oh-Oh, looks like we have the court turned the wrong way. I bet that red cone is on the East end of a fifty-foot lot. The grass looks untouched, ribbon walkways looking even and true. The patented Com-Lox hold downs (missing any?) are being used for a plywood pit cover with cutout for traffic cone. It looks too neat to be an ordinary horseshoe court, but guess it passes muster. Note: Nowhere do we see Steve's wife's reaction to the new construction. I wonder, what's her take? Also note location of the rear gate, where Steve can make his hasty getaway when necessary. He's known to do that and not return again until he runs three four miles.
