The story I’m about to tell took place in Springfield Illinois at the 2009 World Tournament. Though it’s a little past due, I believe it is still worth sharing.
For the majority, competing on the “Big Stage” has a way of knotting up the nerves, but not for this one, then-79 year old Jim Haupt. After two days, Haupt had distanced himself from the rest of the competition, finding himself alone at the top with a 9-0 record. The next best record at the time was 7-2.
Apparently feeling pretty good about his current status, a comment directed his way caused some need for introspection. The comment suggested that Jim by all outward appearance did not appear to be enjoying himself and certainly did not appear to be winning his games.
So, on the third and final day of his class, a new approach was adopted. Instead of the angry faces, grumbling and eye-rolling for every non-ringer, he chose to whistle his way through each of his final four games. The tunes were varied and happy-sounding. Because I had the privilege to keep score for his class, I can attest to the change in atmosphere.
One contestant in Jim’s class (age 60+, 40 feet), was apparently bothered by the cheerful countenance was over-heard saying, “I’m really struggling. I even lost to the old guy!”
Well, this “old guy” eventually did take a loss, but at the end of the day, finished at the top of his class with a 12-1 record. More importantly, he carried with him an attitude of a true champion.
Following a good example is an admonition worth remembering! The thought of the smiling champion caused me to think of something the apostle Paul stated:
“Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.” I Corinthians 11:1
